Guided Snowshoe Trek to Burnt Rock Mountain

Challenge yourself to the ultimate winter experience in our neck of the woods. Climb Fayston’s famed Burnt Rock via the Hedgehog Brook Trail. The first 2 miles are a good warm-up, winding over swift rivers and through Birch, Hemlock, and Maple forests. Notice the old stone walls and sugarbushes which mark settlements of yore. Then the trail climbs steeply upward to Vermont’s famous Long Trail. We’ll climb over the gap in the Monroe Range and up the last mile to the rocky, exposed summit of Burnt Rock. This comely mountain stands alone, above tree line, and affords stunning 360-degree views of the Northfield Ridge, the Green Mountains, Lake Champlain and the Champlain Valley, the Adirondacks of New York, and the Whites of New Hampshire. Truly spectacular and worth the climb. This trip is rated difficult, with steep climbs and exposed areas. 5 ½ miles round trip. Bring a snack, something to drink and appropriate outdoor attire.

Take an invigorating snowshoe tour through a beautiful Beech, Hemlock and Maple forest to learn what a real sugarbush is (no not the ski area).  What a great combination of snowshoeing and maple sugaring!  We will start at the beginning of the sugaring operation at the tap lines and work our way down the hill to the final destination – The Sugar House.

There we will learn about the final steps required to change sap into Maple Syrup (it takes 40 gallons of sap to produce one gallon of maple syrup).  Enjoy a sample of the days fresh maple syrup and learn about the different grades of syrup.
